Notes: Mogollon, a side project of winemaker Santiago Reta, is made from Malbec of the Uco Valley – home to some of the highest vineyards in Mendoza like the Gualtallary and Vista Flores vineyards from which these grapes are sourced. The Gualtallary vineyard’s stone-covered, sandy soils yield grapes with retained freshness and plenty of minerality. The Vista Flores Vineyard has soils with more clay which provides bolder fruit characteristics and tannic structure to the finished wine. Aged for one year in neutral French barriques, this Malbec is rich and juicy with notes of macerated black cherry and ripe plum while an herbaceous quality accompanies the sleek and polished tannins.

Notes: The ClaudeVal wines come to us from Domaine Paul Mas, located about as far south in the Languedoc as you can get and still be in France. And although you may technically be in France, the food, wine, and culture will all be Catalan. ‘Vendages’ is no exception – blending traditional Southern French grapes with their own local varieties to create a unique, value oriented, every day drinking red. Warm punchy fruit open on the nose followed by plenty of ripe black fruit. The palate is medium bodied, smooth, and a little spicy, with just a touch of tannin on the finish.
Pairings: Keep it simple with some mild blue cheese and honey on a baguette

Notes: Wild wicker grows throughout Corsica, including the estate whose namesake, Vetriccie, is a symbol of the unspoiled nature of the area. While owner and winemaker Daniel Barcelo is a Frenchman by birth, he moved to New Mexico to run a vineyard there for many years before returning to his European roots. Because of this, Daniel takes great pride in finding balance and harmony between the Corsican environment and his viticulture practices that blend both ‘New World’ and ‘Old World’ techniques all while maintaining the integrity of the land. Showy, bright raspberry, red licorice, and a dusty earth quality make this wine a versatile and exciting island blend.

Notes: The Saveurs du Temps cooperative originated as a partnership between a few small, dedicated growers in 1929. Together, they continue to farm their land traditionally, yet have pooled together to share modern winemaking equipment in their cellars where they craft impressive wines throughout the Languedoc at outstanding values. This classic blend of Grenache and Syrah comes to us from Costières de Nîmes, the most southerly appellation of the Rhone Valley. Adjacent to Provence, the area has made a name for itself by making Provençal-style rosés with notes of watermelon rind, raspberry and just a hint of wet rock minerality.

Notes: In 1946, Sardinia was recovering from World War II. A large part of their ‘Piani di Rinascita,’ or ‘Rebirth Plans,’ was to redistribute agricultural lands. The area of Nurra, in northwest Sardinia, was reclaimed by the government and then given over to farmworkers, and, in 1959, a hundred of them formed a cooperative which led to the formation of Santa Maria la Palma. Now, they continue to honor the land of Sardinia by showcasing their native grapes and terroir in an approachable way. The sandy minerality comes through in a big way, meets up with aromas of sage plant, textured almond flour, and flavors of tangy lemon, orange, and fresh green apple.
Pairings: Cioppino loaded with clams, mussels, and shrimp with crusty bread for dipping

Notes: Although Marche tends to be a forgotten wine region in Italy, it cannot be forgotten when it comes to Verdicchio. The indigenous grape thrives in the continental climate provided by the surrounding Appenines and Adriatic coast and some of the best vineyard sites are found along the Esino River in Matelica. Agricola Borgo Paglianetto is uniquely situated on a North-South orientated slope, creating its own ecosystem. This certified organic wine has crisp and clean flavors of tangerine, granny smith apple, nectarine and almond with a gentle saline finish.

Notes: Bodegas Olivares is situated in the north end of the region of Jumilla, approximately 825 meters above sea level, making it much higher in elevation than the majority of their neighbors. Warm days and cool nights give the final wines better balance and more intense aromatic development. Their vines are rare survivors of the phylloxera epidemic that spread across Europe in the 19th century, providing the Hoya de Santa Ana vineyard with some of the oldest examples of ungrafted vines. Fresh and bright with floral notes, ripe red fruit and crisp minerality, this Garnacha will more than satisfy those looking for a classic Provence style rosé with a bit of Spanish flare!
Pairings: Tapas! Like croquettes with Serrano ham and Manchego cheese
Bedrock Wine Co, founded in 2007, is a mission-driven project dedicated to preserving and rehabilitating old vineyards around California. A true ‘from the ground up’ story, Bedrock began in a converted chicken coop in a friend’s backyard with the intention of making wines full of personality from thoughtfully farmed nearby vineyards. Today, their grapes are mainly sourced from some of California’s oldest vineyards planted by the pioneers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The winery is dedicated to exploring the diverse terroirs of California while taking advantage of the opportunity to produce a wide range of styles with a focus on one of California’s noble grapes – Zinfandel.
Chris Cottrell has been working in the wine industry since the early 2000’s. He got his start at a small neighborhood wine shop in Manhattan and it was here that Chris and Morgan Twain-Peterson, founder of Bedrock Wine Co, would join forces. After Morgan founded Bedrock, Chris would travel to California a couple of times a year to assist at harvest, together growing a beautiful winemaking partnership. In 2011, Chris and Morgan developed a project called Under the Wire which focused on single-vineyard, single-vintage sparkling wines and later that year, Chris officially joined Morgan as a partner in Bedrock Wine Co. We’re excited for Chris to make his tasting debut here at the shop!

Ehren took an unconventional route to becoming a winemaker. A path that involved no diplomas from esteemed oenology schools nor a single day in the classroom. After returning to the US from traveling abroad and working with many different hats in the wine world from salesman to sommelier, Ehren found himself working with some of the best in the biz out in California. It was during this time that Bruce Neyers, Helen Turley, and Larry Turley were where it was all going down for producing top level wines, especially Zinfandel on the West Coast. However, he soon ventured out on his own to start a project in the cooler climate of the Sonoma Coast. Where he landed after searching for the best soils and microclimates of the region, he planted 14 acres of vines, and throughout his searches, fostered relationships with some of the region’s top grape growers. His wines are a direct and beautiful correlation to his patience and careful attention to detail.
East coast native turned California winemaker, Darren got his first insight into the wine world as a Jersey boy, growing up in an Italian and Irish family with every meal centered around wine. Throughout his life, between moving to Montana for school and taking some time abroad in Italy, food and wine seemed to follow him everywhere like an itch he couldn’t scratch. It wasn’t until 2008 when he first laid his hands on some winery equipment, becoming a cellar rat in Brooklyn for Red Hook Winery. After six vintages and working his way up to assistant winemaker, he decided to head West. Darren was immediately drawn to Failla as a way for him to express what it means to him to make honest wines with a sense of place.

The property that would become the esteemed Hirsch Vineyards was purchased by David Hirsch in 1978. He first planted Pinot Noir and Riesling in 1980, and by 1996 the vineyards had developed to over 44 acres of vines. Originally, all the grapes grown were sold to other wineries, but in 2002, after twenty-two years of planting and farming, David began producing his own wines under his family name. Today, Hirsch Vineyards is comprised of over 60 distinct farming blocks covering 72 acres, all of which have been converted to biodynamic viticulture and each with their own distinct terroir that David and Jasmine have expertly harnessed in each of their bottlings.
Jasmine Hirsch spent her childhood growing up in her father’s vineyards. After attending school in Philadelphia and spending several years traveling, she returned home in 2008 to take over sales and marketing as well as learn the land, vines, and winemaking techniques that her father had so proudly developed. By 2015 she became the General Manager of the winery, and in 2019 she completely took over as winemaker – we’re looking forward to tasting her first vintage! As fun, loving, and charming as any human being can be, we’re excited to have friend of the shop, Jasmine, back here in Raleigh and we’re even more excited to have her behind the bar to taste through some of her family’s delicious Pinot Noirs for which they’re known.
